This April, The Huntsman: Winter’s War (sequel to Snow White and Huntsman) will be released.
As a brand that creates many animated works adapted from classic fairy tales, Walt Disney is an extremely successful studio with this trend.
.
Maleficent
Cinderella 2015
Into the Woods
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
Alice in Wonderland
This leads to a phenomenon that even though making films from fairy tales has begun since the beginning of film history, they have never received so much investment.
However, Walt Disney is not the only company taking the steering wheel in the race.
.
Snow White and the Huntsman
Mirror Mirror
Hansel and Gretel
Jack the Giant Slayer
Red Riding Hood
This trend appears for many reasons:
1. Guarantee in terms of audience:
Children’s audiences go to see fairy tale adaptations to wait for miracles, adult audiences go to see them to find the child in themselves.
2. Movies made from fairy tales do not require copyright:
Not only do filmmakers not have to pay a dime to the authors, because either it’s a long-ago crowd, or they’ve been dead for too long.
They can make their own movies however they like.
3. Movies based on fairy tales also have revenue from spin-off products
Walt Disney, with the advantage of owning a series of amusement parks, is the company that profits the most (but not the only one) from these works.
With all of the above economic reasons, plus the increasingly developed film techniques, it is completely understandable that the list of live-action movies based on fairy tales is getting longer and more competitive!
