The Met Gala is still known as one of the most prestigious annual fashion events in the world, not only because it is a night to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but also because the exclusive guests include famous models.
And the theme, which is also the inspiration for the success of the annual Met Gala, is always anticipated by fans before the event.
How to choose a topic
This year’s theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” was launched to awaken the invisible intersection between fashion and Catholicism.
Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, is aware that this topic will be controversial because when placed side by side, religion and fashion are completely separate categories.
This is the first time religion has been a theme of the Met Gala.
However, according to Bolton, every exhibition should survive debate: “I think it is important to promote debate and bring forward ideas that are urgent.

How topics are approved
Once Bolton and his associates are satisfied with a theme, they present it to the museum director for approval.
Anna Wintour has become a close associate of Bolton, as well as a key figure in the Met Gala exhibition.
Powerful editor-in-chief Anna Wintour will continue to be the `in charge` of this year’s program.
The interesting thing about the Met Gala is that the organizing committee (led by Anna Wintour) always challenges the participants’ creativity by coming up with a theme and everyone wears costumes that match that theme.

Even after a topic has been agreed upon by all parties, changes can still occur.
The theme of the 2017 Met Gala is to honor the artistic legacy of designer Rei Kawakubo in the fashion industry.
“This year’s exhibition is quite close to me,” Bolton shared.
